Top college programs around the nation aren’t waiting around for elite players to even reach high school before they start offering scholarships these days. We’ve seen this happen more and more.

Now it’s happened again, as Michigan football has offered eighth-grader Tyler Martin a scholarship, the young man announced on his Twitter account Thursday.

Even before his freshman year, Martin has NFL size. He comes in at 6-foot-3 and 227 pounds, according to USA Today, and started games at both linebacker and tight end for the Knights last season. He led the team with 100 tackles this past season.

“He’s a tremendous kid that happens to be a tremendous athlete,” Knights head coach Mike Willey said. “He’s worked exceptionally hard and put himself in a good position, that’s why I think Michigan says, yeah, this is the kind of guy they want.”

No doubt, Martin will receive plenty more offers before his signing day arrives, nearly a half-decade from now.
